Driver, 18, killed friend in high-speed car crash
AN 18-year-old killed one of his best friends after losing control of his car as he hurtled along a Bristol road at more than twice the speed limit.
Saad Beg had three passengers in his Honda Civic as he accelerated to more than 60mph on a wet, slippery Feeder Road on the night of July 3 last year, Bristol Crown Court heard.
After losing control , Beg's car hit a postbox, "flew" across the road and hit a tree before flipping over and landing in SCS Autoparts' car park.
Baz Cottle, 19, who had been sitting behind the driver's seat, was thrown 6ft from the car and suffered fatal head injuries.
His friends emerged from the crash with only minor injuries, despite the fact that none of them had been wearing seatbelts.
Mr Cottle's family stormed out of the court room, visibly disgusted, as Judge Geoffrey Mercer QC sentenced Beg to a total of one year, nine months in a Young Offenders' Institution.
The sentencing guidelines had a starting point of 15 months to three years, but Cottle was given credit for admitting the offence. He was also banned from driving for three years.
Earlier in proceedings, Judge Mercer said: "He was driving at a speed that would have been excessive in ordinary driving conditions, but it was much too fast in the conditions that were prevailing at that time."
Passing sentence, the judge said: "He was driving much too fast and he lost control."
Beg, of Stockwood Crescent, Knowle, passed his test in December 2011. As well as causing death by dangerous driving, he also admitted fraud by falsely claiming to hold a provisional licence to get insurance for the Honda Civic
Prosecuting, Rupert Lowe said investigations revealed that other than one quote for £70,000 per year, someone of Beg's age would not have been able to get insured on the car if he had been truthful.
"He was inexperienced and had been driving illegally for all, or most of that time," Mr Lowe added.
Explaining how Beg had been driving before the crash near the junction with Avonside Road, he told the court: "It (the car) was seen to be weaving and driven erratically at what was described as incredibly high speeds."
Although Beg had no previous convictions, he had cautions for taking a family member's car without consent and driving while uninsured.
Mr Lowe said it was "extraordinarily good luck" that apart from Mr Cottle, no-one else was seriously injured.
But collision investigators said such was the impact of the car hitting the tree, even if Mr Cottle had been wearing a seatbelt, he still may have died.
Mitigating, Keir Monteith said: "He (Beg) is truly sorry and remorseful and he asked me to publicly say that again."
He told the court Beg, an apprentice plumber, had tried to revive Mr Cottle and had been extremely concerned about how he was after the crash.
"He will live with this for the rest of his life," Mr Monteith added.
Mr Cottle, of Broomhill, was a popular 19-year-old with four brothers and a sister. His friends and family described him as "bubbly", "kind" and a "proper gentleman".
As previously reported, in the wake of his death, a campaign was launched to encourage people to wear seatbelts – called "Belt up for Baz".
Special wristbands were sold in his memory to pay for a memorial bench installed near the Thekla nightclub, his favourite venue.

Report: Hyundai and Kia set aside $412 million for false mileage claims
Filed under: Government/Legal, Hyundai, Kia, Earnings/Financials

We still don't know how the whole fuel economy ratings debacle is going to play out for Hyundai and Kia, but both automakers are preparing to make good on their promises to reimburse vehicle owners for lower-than-promised mileage figures. According to Automotive News, Hyundai and Kia have set aside a combined total of $412 million ($225 million for Hyundai and $187 million for Kia) as compensation, which will be sent out on a case-by-case basis via debit cards depending on the vehicle and the mileage driven.
Announced back in November, the exaggerated miles per gallon claims affect around 900,000 Kia and Hyundai products produced for the 2011 through 2013 model years sold in the US and Canada. This whole deal has had plenty of action ranging from suspected whistleblowing from a rival US automaker and even insider trading, but it has probably been most frustrating for vehicle owners who, in most cases, saw their vehicles' city and highway ratings drop between one and three digits.

UFC on Fox 6?s fighters are happy to fight in their own backyard
CHICAGO -- UFC on Fox 6 is packed with homegrown talent. Clay Guida, Mike Russow and Ricardo Lamas all grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Anthony Pettis is from nearby Milwaukee. Eric Koch was raised in Iowa, then moved to Milwaukee and trains with Pettis. The card has a noticeably Midwestern feel, and the fighters are happy about fighting so close to their own backyard.
For Guida, there is an extra thrill in fighting Hatsu Hioki at the United Center. Growing up in Johnsburg, Ill., he watched the Bulls dominate the 90s from that arena, and later, saw the Blackhawks win their first Stanley Cup in 53 years. Guida was at the Blackhawks' home opener on Tuesday night, and it's quite moving for him to get to compete in the same place.
"I've been going to sleep with an even bigger smile on my face knowing that I get to fight in the friendly confines, the Madhouse on Madison, you're going to see the true definition of the madhouse. I get chills every time I think about it," Guida said.
"To be able to perform in that stage, the house that Jordan built, and [Scottie] Pippen, and John Paxson and Bill Cartwright, and all these guys, the six-time champion Chicago Bulls, the former Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks, it's an honor. To see my dad and my aunts and uncles and that this is where they watched those teams, I'm kind of at a loss for words for it."
Lamas wrestled and coached at Elmhurst College, a division III school in Chicago's west suburbs. The wrestling team was so excited about Lamas' fight in Chicago that they made a change to their schedule.
"They have a meet in Wisconsin, it was a quad," Lamas said. "They canceled two of the matches so they can make it back in time for my fight. My head coach, my old coach, they're all going to be there."
But that doesn't add any pressure to Lamas.
"Honestly, it makes me feel more comfortable being at home, being surrounded by people I'm familiar with. If anything, it makes me more comfortable and will help me perform better on Saturday night."
Koch will face Lamas and his large cheering section, but he's hoping to draw energy from his own fans.
"Chicago, I know this is Lamas' hometown, but I'm right down the road. It's not a problem for me. It feels like an old school fight. It feels like a local fight, like I used to drive in Iowa," Koch said.
Koch was slated to face Jose Aldo in a title fight in July, but an injury took Koch out of the match. The title shot went to former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. No matter who is in the crowd, Koch is focused on getting his title shot back.
"I used to fight in front of my family all the time. I used to have big crowds for cheering for me. It doesn't bother me. I'm here to get my title shot back."
Pettis, who will fight Donald Cerrone, sees the extra fans in the crowd as no different from the ones who fill his sports bar in Milwaukee.
"I fight on pay-per-view on my sports bar back home. Every time my bar is filled up for my fights. I don't think it's more pressure, I'm going to feel more relaxed knowing my family is in the audience. Afterwards, they can celebrate with me."

Bristol City pull out of deal to sign Crawley Town defender Kyle McFadzean
Bristol City have pulled out of a deal to sign Crawley Town defender Kyle McFadzean.
Although a fee and contract had already been agreed, City head coach Sean O'Driscoll had doubts over the 25-year-old's fitness.
Out of action since November after contracting a serious viral infection, McFadzean was making a slower-than-expected recovery and there was a risk he might not be fit to play until much later in the season.
That was enough to persuade O'Driscoll to pull out of the deal and he is now likely to seek central defensive reinforcements in the loan market when the window re-opens next month.
But he told The Post he is still interested in bringing McFadzean to Ashton Gate and a deal could yet be done in the summer.
O'Driscoll said: "I feel it is important to end the speculation. The medical people have collected all the data and talked and it is not certain that Kyle will play against this season.
"The short-term is probably a little bit more important than the long-term for us and, although I'm still interested in Kyle, it is more likely to be something we do in the close season."
Crawley Town chief executive Richard Low commented: "There has been a lot of speculation about Kyle in the last few days and, as everyone knows, we were having on-going discussions with Bristol City.
"They have now pulled out of any deal to sign Kyle, so he remains a Crawley Town player, which is great news for the club.
"Of course, the transfer window is open for another seven days and who knows what might happen, but Kyle is happy here and is working hard in the gym to get his fitness back."
