LG's 55-inch OLED TV enters the third dimension, we slide on our glasses (hands-on)

We first saw LG's 55-inch OLED TV at last year's CES, where it drew a fair share of oohs and ahhs at the company's press event. In May, the tentative pricing info for the European market was released, but this set's future in the US remained TBD. Fast forward to IFA 2012, and we're in front of this giant again -- but this time, it's sporting 3D. True, at 55 inches, it's no goliath compared to the 84-inch TVs we've seen this week from Sony, Toshiba and even LG, but the company claims this 55-inch model is the largest OLED HDTV available, and its carbon fiber backing and ultra-thin 4mm profile are certainly the markings of a high-end setup.

During LG's booth tour today, we had a chance to sneak a peek at the now 3D-capable set, which otherwise looks quite similar to the version we saw at CES, albeit with a bit more polish. In order to achieve a 4-millimeter profile, the set packs all of its connectivity in the base module. There's also an Invisible Connection module on order, which hooks up to the TV through a proprietary optical connector and transparent cable, should you wish to mount the display on your wall. Naturally, 3D content wasn't as sharp as its 2D counterpart, but the OLED looked great regardless. With its ultra-thin design, it's surely meant for consumers who care about aesthetics perhaps even more than image quality, but if you can stomach the €9,000 price tag, this is one fine get. Eloise swims to medal glory at national games

A REDLAND girl who received a new heart when she was just 22 months old has won three medals at the British Transplant Games.

Eleven-year-old Eloise Allen had a heart transplant after she contracted a virus when she was one.

She has just returned from the British Transplant Games in Medway where she won silver medals in the 25m freestyle and backstroke swimming events and bronze in the 25m breaststroke.

The youngster suffered viral cardiomyopathy when she was 21 months old, which caused the heart muscle to inflame and stop working properly and she was made a priority for a new organ.

Eloise, who has two sisters and a brother, spent two and a half weeks being treated in the intensive care unit at Bristol Children's Hospital before she was transferred to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle for the operation because there was not a free bed in Great Ormond Street for her to undergo surgery.

She has been a patient at the London children's hospital ever since, attending for check-ups and competed in the Great Ormond Street team at the British Transplant Games, having previously taken part in the Bath games in 2006.

Mum Rebecca said: "Eloise had the ten-year anniversary of her transplant in June and other than having her tonsils out she has not been in hospital apart for routine check-ups, which is better than most children.

"She has had really good health and is growing really well and you would not pick her out from a crowd as having had a transplant.

"She managed the three races and the practices before it. She prefers swimming to the running, although I think she would rather be messing around in the swimming pool."

Rebecca, a paediatric nurse, set up a Facebook support group for the families of people having heart transplants, helping with advice and answering questions, and said that she knew most of the families taking part in the Transplant Games.

"It was great, we had a really good time and knew a lot of the families, which meant there was a really good family atmosphere. Everyone was supportive and cheering on the children. It was a really good, strong team. Great Ormond Street won the best heart team this year."

Eloise said: "It was really exciting to win the medals and was good to be taking part with my friends."

The new Volkswagen Scirocco is a highly sought-after sport coupe, made even more desirable by the fact that we don't get it here. But is that exclusivity enough to make it more tempting Volkswagen than an original 1987 Scirocco? To help find out, Jason Cammisa of Automobile magazine went to Germany to pit the original Scirocco against the current model that we don't get to play with.

Its interesting to look at the way the two cars stack up on paper. The '87 Scirocco that belongs to Cammisa makes 175 horsepower and 150 pound feet of torque from a 2.0-liter 16-valve inline-four engine. Cammisa's 2.0-liter engine is larger and more powerful than the 1.8-liter found in the original car, but it sure makes this compare interesting. The 2012 Scirocco utilizes a 1.4-liter turbocharged four pot to make only 160 horsepower but 177 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the wheelbase of the new car is exactly seven inches longer than the OG Scirocco. Oh, and the 2012 model is more than 700 pounds heavier.
