Digg Re-Emerges as a Single Source of "What the Internet is Talking About"

Digg made its mark by turning Internet news aggregation into a social experience. Now people share links and talk about them everywhere. So Digg is gathering all that scattered activity back into one listing of the best of the Internet. With Digg set to relaunch for the Web and iPhone on Wednesday, general manager Jake Levine found a 25th hour in his workday to tell ReadWriteWeb what to expect.

On July 12, news broke that New York start-up stable Betaworks bought the site for a song. Digg was delivered into the capable hands of the 10-person News.me team, whose app provides a feed of personalized news from readers? Facebook and Twitter feeds. Levine and his team have rebuilt the site from the ground up, targeting as broad an audience as possible.

Broadening the Conversation

?We?re making sure that Digg is conducive to a social experience on and off the Internet,? Levine says. ?Success for us means that you go home or go out with your friends, and what you?re talking about is stuff that you found on Digg.?

Levine's statement is an acknowledgement that conversations around great articles have moved outside Digg?s walls. The new Digg will determine which stories matter based on buzz from Twitter and Facebook in addition to Digg votes. If that buzz arose from a link you shared on Facebook, the Digg page will credit you with the discovery.

Digg v1 won?t have its own commenting system when it launches on Wednesday, which may come as a surprise to past Digg users. Levine doesn?t just want to slap on a Reddit or Hacker News-style upvote/downvote system. ?We weren?t 100% sure that that was right, and we didn?t have time to be wrong.? He wants to learn through experimentation to answer the question: What is this type of network good at?

The conversations will still take place on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and elsewhere. When and if Digg launches its own commenting system, it will be tailor-made for the interests and skills of Digg users.

Keeping It Simple

The new Digg will slim down Digg to its essence as a front page for the most buzzworthy links from around the Web. Levine says he wants the v1 front page to evoke this reaction: ?This is hilarious and great stuff, and it strikes a chord with me.?

The team conducted a survey about the current state of Digg and found that over 80% of respondents consume news from four types of sources: successors of the old Digg like Reddit and Hacker News, blogs, major newspapers? websites, and Twitter. Facebook was also over 60%, beating out TV.

Levine saw ?an opportunity to simplify? in these responses. For the first iteration, Digg will be a desktop and mobile destination for news that, while not replacing all other kinds of sources, is a reliable destination for broadly interesting stuff. As Levine simply puts it, ?Digg is about delivering what the Internet is talking about.?

The Product They Would Have Built Anyway

Before Digg dropped in their laps, most of the new Digg team was building News.me. The key difference between News.me and the new Digg is that News.me personalizes the news to the person reading it, while Digg will initially be built to show the news that matters to everyone.

There are ?100,000-ish? power-user types on News.me who constantly scour their Twitter and Facebook streams for interesting news. The team was already working on how to use the signals from these readers to pull together a more general-interest experience. What they needed was general-interest users. ?Then Digg came along, and it was like, ?Hey, here?s a few million of those people,?? Levine says.

So the Digg team will work backward from a broadly appealing site for the millions of Digg users. It will learn to implement its knowledge of personalization of and conversation about news as it goes.

The team?s ?F?k It, Ship It? ethos is all about delivering something as soon as it?s good, then experimenting, studying and iterating to make it great. ?We built this in six weeks,? Levine says, ?and we want to rebuild it again in another six weeks.?

Hactivists Spoof the New York Times, Mainstream Media Miss the Point

It was the New York Times op-ed that wasn?t. After months of careful planning, Internet activists hailing from WikiLeaks, Anonymous and Yes Men quietly unfurled a very convincing New York Times web page on a lazy Sunday morning. The article fooled everyone for several hours as readers shared it widely via social media, and then enjoyed a second life as media commentators caught on and fulminated over the injustice of it all. Lost in the media kerfuffle, however, was the prank's point - which counterintuitively supported the New York Times.

The bogus article, attributed to columnist and former New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, was published on July 29 under a URL similar to that of New York Times opinion articles and tweeted from a Twitter handle that looked nearly identical to Keller's. In 2010, Keller had helped the New York Times publish secret documents procured by WikiLeaks, but later he distanced himself from the organization's methods, drawing a sharp line between leaking and journalism. Titled "WikiLeaks, a Post Postscript," the fake article stated, "I find myself in the awkward position of having to defend WikiLeaks," and asserts the organization's First Amendment rights. Keller's fans were surprised by the turnaround and shared the article extensively.

At first, Keller himself appeared to accept the article as his own work. A link to the article appeared in his real Twitter stream, only to be deleted hours later. Keller called the shenanigans ?childish? and ?immature satire;? in short, he didn't find it funny. As word of the hoax spread, journalists made it clear that the stunt rubbed them the wrong way, going as far as to criticize the writing in the fake op-ed (some of which was cribbed from Keller's own work). ?I wonder if WikiLeaks might be mounting a stealth campaign to keep copy editors employed,? Andrew Beaujon mused  on Poynter.

One Twitter supporter summed up journalist reaction succinctly with the tweet, ?@wikileaks' triumphant #hoax of the @nytimes shows folks writing about it utterly lack #humor.?

More important, the mainstream media's defensive reaction missed the point. The hoax wasn't meant to be funny or to offend, and it didn't involve any illegal activities such as hacking. ?Nothing was hacked except reality,? said an online activist involved in the prank. The activist, who is also associated with the Occupy movement, asked to remain (literally) anonymous, saying ?I didn?t participate to get famous.?

The fake op-ed was part of a larger campaign that rolled out simultaneously but received much less notice. Concocted in March, the hoax included four additional elements: a fake corporate blog post from PayPal uploaded the same day, the exploitation of the Helvetica font on Twitter when viewed on smartphones (the ?i? and ?l? letters are virtually indistinguishable), a made-up conservative grassroots campaign called Block The New York Times that purportedly accused the New York Times of treason for publishing WikiLeaks-related documents, and a fake subset of Anonymous whose sole mission was to take down Block The New York Times.

The sham conflict between Block New York Times and Anonymous, which was hardly noticed by the mainstream press, was meant to dramatize how easily the New York Times could be censored in a variety of ways: pressure from fringe political groups who don?t value the First Amendment, prosecution by the government, or financial blockade like the one WikiLeaks is facing.

?We were trying to build attention to the possibility of this happening [to the New York Times]? said the activist, equating WikiLeaks' release of secret documents to investigative newspaper journalism. ?We were trying to start the conversation. WikiLeaks here has been prevented from delivering news with this financial blockade.? In other words, if they could do it to WikiLeaks, they could do it to the New York Times.

?Julian [Assange] has a much better sense of humor... but [he and Bill Keller] come from very different backgrounds,? concluded the Anonymous source.

Mitt Romney at 10 Downing Street (Photo by Oli Scarff/Getty Images)When Mitt is back home, will the offensive comments stop? Republicans can only hope so because this race is too important to be decided by ?how much America likes one guy over another?. But such a factor could very well decide the outcome of this election.

How to replace the battery in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace an iPhone 4 battery

If you're iPhone 4 is going on a few years old and your battery just isn't what it was before, replacing the battery can make a huge difference and possibly prolong the life of your device another year if not longer.

An iPhone 4 battery replacement is a super easy repair to perform and only takes about 10 minutes. It'll also cost you a lot less than shelling out money for a brand new phone, especially if you're out of warranty.

Symptoms of a dead or dying battery can include drastically reduced battery life, random reboots, and sluggishness even after a restore. In rare instances, a completely dead battery may result in an iPhone 4 only powering on when plugged into a charging source and when unplugged, the iPhone will turn off instantly.

How to replace the back casing on a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace the back casing on an iPhone 4

If you've cracked the back casing on your iPhone 4 or just want to change it out for a different color, an iPhone 4 back replacement is one of the easiest repairs to perform but if you need some help along the way, check out our guide for reference.

How to replace a cracked screen on a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to DIY repair an iPhone 4 GSM screen

Whether you've cracked just the front glass on your GSM iPhone 4, the touch screen isn't responding, or the LCD looks pixelated or has display issues, this is the repair you want to perform. A front digitizer replacement should resolve any issues with lines through the screen, dead pixels or pixelation, a grey screen due to a bad drop, and obviously a shattered screen. This is one of the harder repairs to perform so proceed with caution.

How to replace the Home button on a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace iPhone 4 GSM home button

The iPhone 4 has been known to have Home button issues for quite a while now. No, WD-40 will not fix it. If anything, using a substance like WD-40 will cause more harm than good. The problem with the Home button almost always stems from the cable becoming worn over time from so many presses. It's flimsy and Apple should have designed it better.

The only thing that will correct Home button issues is a flex cable replacement. Whether it's not responding at all anymore, you've got to push down harder than you should, or it's registering single and double taps funny, a flex cable replacement will fix the issue 99.9% of the time.

How to replace the vibrator assembly in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace GSM iPhone 4 vibrator assembly

If your GSM iPhone 4 vibrator functionality isn't working and the switch seems okay, the actual vibrator assembly could be burnt out. Replacing the vibrator assembly is a fairly easy repair and will only require about 5 minutes of your time. It's also a heck of a lot cheaper than picking up a brand new iPhone.

How to replace the speaker assembly in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace an iPhone 4 speaker assembly

If your loud speaker isn't working in your GSM iPhone 4, you could need to replace the speaker assembly. A good way to know if this is the repair you need is if your speakerphone function doesn't work, no music will play out of the bottom speaker but will work when you've got headphones plugged in, or if the sound is distorted when on speakerphone or while playing music.

How to replace the rear camera in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace the rear camera in an iPhone 4

If you're having image quality issues with the camera in your GSM iPhone 4, it may be time to replace it. One thing to be certain of before proceeding is that the issue is with the actual camera and not the rear housing. The plastic lens that covers your camera is part of the back panel, not the camera itself. Inspect it and make sure it isn't the plastic that is scratched and causing issues. If that is the case, you'll need to perform a back replacement instead.

If there are no blemishes or scratches over the camera lens cover on the rear casing, the actual camera could be the culprit. If that's the case, follow our guide to replace it. It's a relatively easy repair and should be doable for most, even beginners.

How to replace the cellular antenna in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace the cellular antenna on a GSM iPhone 4

If you're having reception issues on your GSM iPhone 4 the culprit could be the antenna itself which is attached to the speaker housing towards the bottom of the device. Symptoms could range from poor service even in good coverage areas to no service at all. There have also been instances of the iPhone 4 not picking up on 3G signals due to a bad cellular antenna. If these issues sound like you, a cellular antenna DIY replacement should solve the problem.

You'll follow almost the same procedure you would for a speaker assembly replacement.

How to replace the dock connector and lower mic in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace the dock connector in an iPhone 4

If your GSM iPhone 4 won't recognize a charger when it's plugged in, it may be time to replace the dock connector assembly. Dock connector issues can stem from using a faulty cable or charger, moisture in the dock connector, or an issue with the 30-pin connector inside the charge port.

If you've got issues with the microphone, this should solve those woes as well. Typically if you've got this issue you experience people not being able to hear you while on a call or when recording video or audio there is no sound being output.

If your iPhone recognizes a charger but dies when you disconnect it, try a battery replacement first as that could be the issue.

How to replace the front facing FaceTime camera in a GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

How to replace GSM ATT iPhone 4 front facing facetime camera

If you're having issues with the front facing camera on your GSM iPhone 4, which is used most often for FaceTime calls, replacing it yourself isn't too big of a challenge if you've got a bit of patience. Symptoms could range from a blacked out camera to distortion to lines through the screen only when you're on a FaceTime call.

How to choose the highest quality colored parts for your iPhone 4

how to choose the best quality color mod parts for your iphone 4

If you're looking into performing a color conversion on your iPhone 4 it's always a good idea to make sure you order high quality parts. Let's face it, eBay and other online resellers have a nasty habit of selling parts that are DOA or issues crop up after a few days. Making sure you use a quality supplier right from the start will save you a lot of headaches.

Apple never made colored parts so you won't find genuine OEM parts anywhere and if anyone claims they are OEM, turn around and run the other way. It doesn't mean there aren't quality parts floating around out there though. Check out our guide of what to look for so you can be prepared before you even place an order.

How to check for water damage before purchasing a used iPhone 4

How to check for water damage before purchasing a used iPhone 4

If you're thinking about picking up a used iPhone 4 from eBay, Craigslist, or any other online source, it's always a good idea to make sure the device hasn't seen any previous water damage before actually committing to the purchase.

You can check some sensors externally and a few internally if the seller will allow it. To make sure you're getting the most for your money and you're not buying a non-working iPhone 4, check out our guide before purchasing

More DIY guides and help

If you've got a CDMA iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or other type of iPhone, we may have guides that can help you fix those as well. If you don't see a guide that can help or can't figure out exactly what the issue is, you can always check out our mod and DIY forums for answers to many questions. If you still can't find what you're looking for, feel free to shoot an e-mail to ally@imore.com with guide suggestions and questions.

Man runs 16,075 days straight

Mark Covert is something of a celebrity in the running world -- he's run at least a mile for 16,075 days in a row. It's the longest active streak ever recorded by the United States Running Streak Association. His closest competitor is Jon Sutherland, who's logged 15,768 days.
Covert started his streak on July 23, 1963, as a high school senior. In 1970 he was named the NCAA individual cross country champion, and he helped his California State University, Fullerton cross country team grab a NCAA Division II title the year after. In 1972, Covert placed 7th at the U.S. Olympic marathon trials.
We caught up with Covert, now a coach and teacher at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California, to ask for his "streaking" tips. The following is an edited version of that interview:
Why did you start running every day?
I had no idea this was going to happen. The summer after I graduated, early in my freshman year of college, I realized I was in 100 days without missing one. I wondered if I could get a year in without missing. That became a little bit of a goal. That year turned to two, to three. At four or five years, I thought, this is a big deal.
I truly look forward to putting my shoes on every day... It's something that makes me feel better, something that in a lot of way is therapeutic -- not only physically but mentally. It's something I enjoy.
What's your running routine like?
I run in the morning; there's no real set time, just earlier in the morning. I usually run between 50 to 60 minutes. Some days I go shorter, some days I run 80 minutes.
I'm sure I don't run as fast as I used to. I tell people the trees pass me by real slow now, but that's ok. I'm still getting something out of it.
How do you fuel your run?
I eat nothing before I go run. I'm up for maybe half an hour, then go out the door. When I come back, I eat a regular breakfast -- oatmeal one day, toast with peanut butter and jelly another day. As I've gotten older, you try to eat a little bit better and little bit wiser.
Lunch, usually an apple and some almonds. Dinner is chicken, fish, a salad, vegetables. One of the things I struggle with is my weight. As I've gotten older... my weight has kind of crept up. That's a never-ending battle.
Do you struggle to drag yourself out of bed in the morning?
I don't have any problem getting out of bed in the morning. I have a sleep disorder, so I wake up early -- four o'clock.
Getting out the door and running for me has never been a problem. When I was younger, when I was in college, I was training for races and things like that and it was something I was committed to being the best I can be. As I've gotten older, it's something that's just ingrained.
Was there any day that you thought, 'I'm just not going to be able to run today'?
The two most recent ones -- 7 years ago I had surgery on my knee. The day after that was a challenge, but I was able to get out and get a mile in.
Fifteen months ago, I hurt my back. That was really a challenge because it was hard to walk, hard to bend over. I hurt it running and when I got back I went to the doctor and he was able to give me a little bit of relief. But the three or four days after that was really uncomfortable and painful.
I'm assuming your doctor told you not to run.
(Laughs). I've surrounded myself with great doctors over the years that have kind of bought into this craziness. They understand if they told me no I'd go out and try to do it anyway.
